about

Just some covers I've done over the past few years from one of my favorite band's catalog. Veruca Salt are a staple from my formative years. Nina Gordon & Louise Post really stood out amongst the crowd in the heyday of the grunge movement. They write (so glad they're back together BTW!) songs that have soft verses that lead up to mean/loud choruses and enough pop hooks to snag a Beatles fan's attention. Their songs are pop, but are smarter than the average pop song. There is also a great sense of humor presented here as well. Then they totally stun us by writing a gorgeous rock ballad or two all the while harmonizing beautifully. Nina & Louise have a bit of that Lennon/McCartney, Hersh/Donelly yin/yang thing working for them as well. With Nina supplying the bouncy and bubbly, while Louise brought the brash and angry. Though they're not exclusive to either, Nina can produce a beastly rocker like "Stoneface" and Louise can do power pop ala "Sound of The Bell", but it's just known to us fans that Nina is the more pop savvy and Louise brings the RAWK. A lovely combination in my book. Steve Lack (bass) and Nina's sibling, Jim Shapiro (drums) provide a rock solid rhythm section and must not go unmentioned.
So, cheers Neen & Weez! You two ladies aren't given enough credit for your pop/rock songcraft. I think recent years have shown more and more young bands coming out of the woodwork citing Veruca Salt as a major influence. If that's not a testament to your relevance I'm not sure what is.

Xoxo,
Jon
